Studio Paintings is an ongoing series in which Whittlesea has employed the addresses of both artists and writers including Mark Rothko, Donald Judd, Piet Mondrian and William Blake.

Produced over three years in Whittlesea's London studio, Studio Painting—James Joyce consists of five 4ft-square canvases and shows the addresses at which Joyce worked after leaving Dublin. The work traces the journey of James Joyce and his family around Europe. With its plain white text on a dark ground the painting has the sombre presence of a memorial. It implicitly compares the long hours spent by Whittlesea in the non-space of his studio with Joyce's life spent in exile. Texts by Andrew Renton and Paul O'Neill.
