Marlene Haring: Square Peg in a Round Hole

Square Peg in a Round Hole, set of 3 mirrors, 160 x 160, 90 x 90, 40 x 40 cm, Nivea Creme (installation: IV Castellon County Council Painting Prize, Museo De Bellas Artes de Castellon, 2007)

The instructions on the back of each mirror read as follows:

  • Square Peg in a Round Hole is a unique piece by Marlene Haring.
  • A circle is inscribed in the square mirror.
  • A layer of Nivea Creme, between 3 and 10 mm thick, fully obscuring the reflective surface, is applied within the circle with a medium-sized trowel.
  • Care is taken to be sure the areas of the mirror outside the inscribed circle are clean and clear. This mirror is a Square Peg in a Round Hole ONLY when Nivea is applied as specified above.
  • The owner of the work may remove the Nivea for storage and transportation.
  • The owner of the work may reapply the circle of Nivea after installation and refresh it periodically.
