Adapting the techniques of aerial photography used in military reconnaissance, cartographic, geological and archaeological surveys, I recorded the surface of the carpet in my studio.

'Artworks, especially those of the highest dignity, await their interpretation. The claim that there is nothing to interpret in them, that they simply exist, would erase the demarcation line between art and non-art. Ultimately, perhaps, even carpets, ornaments, all non-figural things longingly await interpretation.' (T. W.
