Portrait of a Woman with Institution – Hanna Hacker with University of Vienna, video, 11 m, German, 2010

Exhibited: Prague Biennale 5, Prague

Hanna Hacker is a historian, cultural critic, writer, feminist- and queer theoretician, professor at the University of Vienna. She was a founder of Stichwort — Archiv der Frauen and Lesbenbewegung, a feminist library and primary archive of autonomous women’s and lesbians’ movements and organisations in Austria.

Hanna chose for this portrait the university where she works. She draws attention to the crisis in higher education and the permanent state of gender inequality in academic life. Making the video coincided with a wave of student protests in Austrian universities against the commodification of knowledge and Bologna reforms. Hanna chose the quotations of feminist thinkers, whose positions and ideas are still neglected.
